Day 21 – Adiós Barcelona!

Another full day ahead. We made sure we woke up early as we still had to see a few things in Barcelona before flying off to Nice, France in the afternoon. First stop was to see the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. The unfinished church which started its construction way back in 1882, designed by the famous Spanish architect Gaudi. The architecture is nothing like we’d seen before. It totally stood out from the buildings around it. As early as we were, the lines to get in were pretty long and so we decided not to go in. There were a few police officers around the area which made us feel quite secure, pickpockets beware!
Next stop was to see Park Guell, as we read that you get to see a decent view of the city as the park was quite high up a hill, with a climb to match. It got pretty warm that day, and I was sweating. We reached the park at the top. You had to pay to get in to the main ’square’. It didn’t look particularly special plus again, the lines were ridiculously long. We followed the path to the top. The sidewalk were lined by souvenir vendors, most were illegal, as in I didn’t think they were allowed to sell in that area and it was hilarious to see them quickly pack up their goods which were placed within a sheet of cloth and when the police on their bikes came, they grabbed their goods as fast as they could, ran up the hills and hid within the bushes. The park was designed by Gaudi (he was very popular back in the days). You could see his signature out-of-this-world style from the details of the structures within the park.
Afterwards we headed to Port Vell as I wanted to see the water. Well I was hoping to see a beach. I could have done my research better. Anyway, we enjoyed strolling by the harbour, towards the pier which led us to Maremagnum Mall where we had Udon again for lunch. This time we had noodles.
With little time we had left in Barcelona we headed towards the city centre to see the Santa Maria del Mar, yes… it was another church, very gothic. We walked around for a little bit and then back to our hotel, grabbed our bags and headed to the airport.
Our flight was at 6pm, reached Nice by 7:30pm. We weren’t quite sure how to get to our hotel but we knew that it was close to the airport. We asked a lady at the bus service stall if the bus that people were going on passed our hotel and she mentioned that our hotel, Novotel Nice Arenas, actually had a free pick up service from the airport. Luckily my phone was on roaming and so we called them to pick us up. We knew that we were quite far from the city centre and so we decided that we would just go there in the morning and so we had dinner at the hotel instead. The food was decent, I had salmon with salad and chips. It was an early night in for another busy day ahead.
