Sundown in Santorini – Day 26 Part 2

Day 26 – Sundown in Santorini Part 2
22 April 2015
Santorini

From a decent two-hour nap I woke up excited to see our first sunset over the island. It was 7pm, the start of the golden hour. I tried to wake Wifey up but she was not prepared to leave the comfort of our bed just yet. Not wasting any more precious time, I grabbed my camera and told her I would be back for her later. I made my way first to Thira, walking briskly sometimes running from places to another where I could get a decent photo of the orange sunlight shining on the white rocky dwellings by the cliffs. There was a point where I could see the whole village of Thira and beyond illuminated by the setting sun, it was an amazing view. If only Wifey was there with me to enjoy it.

I managed to return to Imerovigli just before the sun was fully set and the further west I explored the more beautiful the scenery was. I was able to see the Skaros Rock which used to be the main village of Santorini back in the days. A fortress was constructed there for protection against pirates. The village survived many earthquakes but eventually people moved to a more stable place, which became the town of Thira. Only a few ruins of the early civilisation still stood but the rock foundation remained.

It was quite dark when I got back to our hotel where Wifey was waiting for me. We got dressed to look for a place to eat. We passed a few restaurants but we weren’t really convinced by their menu. It was also quite cold and windy and so we didn’t want to be walking too far away from our hotel. We ended up at the same Souvlaki restaurant from lunch. I didn’t mind at all. Their souvlaki was one of the best I’ve had. After dinner we went for a quick stroll on the cliff side of Thira to see it at night. As much as we wanted to stay out, we were just too cold and so back to the hotel we went.
